功夫熊猫(gōngfu xióngmāo) Kung Fu Panda is a remarkable movie released in June last year. Chinese style is prevailing in the movie, which is the combination of “功夫”(gōngfu) Chinese martial arts and China’s national treasure–panda. Many Chinese enjoyed this movie as well, so you know that while humorous and entertaining, it still stayed true to the Chinese elements it introduced. The combination of humor and kung fu culture was enough to make even the Chinese laugh, and the lines in this movie are also fabulous and unforgettable.

中国功夫(zhōng guó gōngfu) Chinese Kung Fu

“功夫”(gōngfu) kung fu in China is both popular and traditional, and it has a long history of development. Many Chinese and foreigners alike love it and want to learn it. “功”(gōng) means achievement and accomplishment and “夫”(fu)refers to men, so the phrase can be understood as accomplished men. In ancient China, those who were taught “功夫” (gōngfu) kung fu were all men, but now everyone can learn “功夫”(gōngfu) kung fu in China, including foreigners. It is now also known as “kung Fu” in the world. You can say “李小龙的功夫非常棒”(Lǐxiǎolóng de gōngfu fēicháng bàng) Li Xiaolong’s kung fu is great.

Last week in China, Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen became “火爆(huǒbào)” explosively popular. The Transformers finally has surpassed Ice Age and became NO.1 on Friday. But on the weekend Billboard charts, they “并列(bìngliè)” stood side by side in the race for most popular movies. This week, the two movies continue their hot competition.

The recent news reported that the Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen would be the first movie which reaches RMB 400,000,000 box offices in China. Young people regard the main characters as their idols and heroes and enjoy the enthusiasm brought by this movie.

What does this word mean?

It has been one of the most popular Internet words since 2008. With the original meaning of thunder, the word (“雷”Leí) has been given another meaning on the web. Now it means that one is shocked by some bold actions, or by strange or even embarrassing things. It is said that this word is originated from the word
“雷倒” (leí dǎo), which is the dialect of “浙江” (zhèjiang) province of China.

How to use the word?

You can say “我被雷到了” (wǒ bèi léi dào le ) or “好雷人啊” (hǎo léi rén a ) to express “I am shocked”. So there are many circumstances for you to use this word. For example, after watching a video in which a bear dances like a ballet dancer, you can say “我被雷到了” (wǒ bèi léi dào le ) to express “I am shocked by this bear”.

The Chinese word “山寨” (shān zhài) literally refers to remote mountain villages that are mostly beyond the reach of administrative control. Recently, however, the word has been used to describe people who imitate celebrities, or describe products or works of art or pop culture that have borrowed ideas from famous brands products or works. “山寨” (shān zhài) has become a culture of its own, symbolizing anything that imitates something famous.

Besides “山寨” (shān zhài) electronic products, of which there are many, there are “山寨” (shān zhài) movies, “山寨” (shān zhài) stars and even a “山寨” (shān zhài) Spring Festival Gala, a copy of the 25-year-old traditional show presented by CCTV on Chinese Lunar New Year’s eve.

去年底，我们对学校的在校生进行了一次问卷调查，其中一个调查结果值得玩味，拿出来交流分享。调查题目和结果是这样的： What are your motivations to study Chinese? Interests in Chinese Culture 59.38% Business needs 32.81% Others 23.44% Inheriting Chinese culture 21.88% Daily Needs 17.19% Preparation for Test 12.50% Supplementary to school study 7.81% 题目是多选的，所以各个选项加在一起是超过100%的。
